great demonstration of different Kherwa forms

I am always in search over the Internet how kherwas are played with different songs, bhajans, ghazals or old film songs. I came across this one which very nicely demonstrates how different variations of Kherwas are played on accompaniment and how they sound. Most of these Kherwa variations are prese...

Re: Sindhi Kerwa

I listened to the video at 1.15 min at a very slow speed ( setting at 0.25 ) on my lap top. Essentially very similar to what Dhatidha pointed out except I think he is playing Dha N Dha Dhin, Ta N Ta Tin Ta N Ta Tin, Dha N Dha Dhin ( Ta on Na on the kinar) , N or Ne on the right side of Syahi as poin...

Re: Popular Bollywood Kehrwa in 4+4

I am not sure if I was asking a very simple question or a very hard one but after a few opinions outside of this forum, I have this from the horses mouth! Dhi Te Tin Na, Ti Te Din Na played in a 'swaying' fashion. Some may also play Dha Ti Ta Ta , Dha Ti Dha Dha. (See Anuj Lodhi's lesson #4) Also, e...

Re: Popular Bollywood Kehrwa in 4+4

Hi Saurav Thank you. I am already subscribed to all except Kulkarni which I did today. I have certainly learned a lot from these. Some times I wonder whether they all have the same roots( genealogy) since most compositions are similar. What I was mostly interested in getting the opinion was that , w...

Re: playing dha tre kre dhe te te ... fast

IMO, tabla is like a language if learnt in the early developmental years when the growth plates are still robust, gets ingrained into your system and one could even put lightening to shame, like Zakirji or Swapanji. Once past this stage however, you are essentially at the mercy of infinite practice....

Popular Bollywood Kehrwa in 4+4

Hi Happy New Year!! I know there are hundred different variations of Kehrwa, but there is one very popular variation in 4+4, played most often in medium or fast speed for most Bollywood ( Hindi Film ) songs, and really sounds very pleasing too. Just wondering if any one knows this popular variation, ...

Re: What Dayans (scale) are normally used during accompaniment?

Very Informative thread. I always wondered about this. During tabla practice our teacher always had us tune to C#. However, when I tried to google the chromatic tuner( below), a bit bewildered on Female vocalists scale of G#. Afraid of ripping my head and ear drums!!!! https://www.youtube.com/...

Re: I feel dumb asking this but I have to

I was always taught to play 'Ke' on the bayan with 'tin'. I have taken lessons in india in the remote past ,as well as here in the Bay area at Ali Akbar College and with Zakir Hussein at Berkeley years ago, and was always taught this way. I am not sure if this has changed recently as David pointed o...

Re: Hey guys made a tabla course that teaches some keharwa thekas

Thanks for taking my feedback as a constructive criticism.Yes, it would be great if you could demonstrate the practical applications of the Tekas and variations there of , to at least a few lines of some of the Bhajans or Gazals. By the way, I am not an advanced player by any means like some of the ...

Re: Hey guys made a tabla course that teaches some keharwa thekas

I am very sorry to say that this is an extremely basic course. It just gives you the basic kehrva teka and some very minor variations there of. The 40 min course does not make any references to any bhajans, gazals or Bollywood songs. Compared to Bhilaj, White India or Tej Singh on u-tube, which are ...

Re: Teentaal mukhdaa for beginners

In the line 'Kitatak gadigana dhaa S', the 'na' is played with the ring finger - right? 'gadigene' played like Ge, Tun, Ge and Ne? I don't recall which Gharana, that is how I recall being taught many years ago! :)

Nice and easy composition at any stage of learning.Parts of this can be even played as tukda with the tihai on accompaniment. I break all the traditional rules while playing :)

Re: Tabla - What is played when singer pauses and only harmonium is played

It depends on the level of your comfort and expertise but mostly the laggis with a tihai as stated above.I took the liberty of posting Tej Singh's lesson #94 on U-tube. Listen to the segment around 4.05 min into the video.
