Which raga is 'Ka Karoon Sajni' ?

Postby aridra » Wed May 30, 2012 5:34 pm

Hello All ! I would very much like someone to help me identify the raga of the original version by Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan ? http://youtu.be/D7iDE66o_b4 . It was identified as Bhairavi somewhere, is that correct? When I heard the Pandit Ajoy Chakrabarti version, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8JO62DJ1kgs, he seems to use all the notes in the scale! Would you then call it Sindh Bhairavi or Mishra Bhairavi? He also mentions Irani Bhairavi for a particular section. What is the difference? I am very grateful for any help, thank you.

Speaking unauthoritatively, I'd place my bets with what the video description lists...sindhu bhairavi, because of the use of the shuddh re. I thought I caught a whiff of shuddh Dha in there too which took me off guard but it could have just been a shade of komal Ni.

I would go with the Sindhi Bhairavi. It certainly can have both of the Re and Dha notes. When played in a light form by a skilled player Bhairavi can have every note.

An interesting aside - my gharana, Vishnipur, allows both shuddha and komal re and shuddha and komal dha in vocal. But only shuddha and komal re in rudra vin. It does not allow the shuddha dha for the vin.

Hello Aridra,

'Aayay Na Baalam!Ka Karoonh Sajanee?' is surely a Tthumree in the Raag Sindhoo Bhairavee/Sindhu Bhairavi...

(Bear in mind-i spell the Raag Names or South Asian words in English in the way they are pronounced in South Asia)...
