Sorting out ragas in Bhajans

Post by Christianamr » Fri Oct 19, 2012 2:37 pm

" Maiya Mein Bhaiya "

Sung by Anup Jalota

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VmWzdIOAjgA

I think it could be Paraj, Basant or another raag from Purvi thaat that is uttarang-centered . No instance of shuddha ma though , even though this happens usually in most of these ragas ...

" Aarti Kunj Bihari ki "

by Shri Hari Om Sharan

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hjvPt6bGA2E

There seem to be various ragas : Maybe Jhinjoti or a Khamaj-prakar for the chorus ( Sthayi ? ) , and Maand for the verses ( antaras ? ) , though I think there are some hints of other ragas also , maybe even Pahadi .

" Shyam Rang Mein "

Anup Jalota

The major part is in Kirwani , and other parts that might be Bhimpalasi .

" Hari Hum kab honge Brijwasi "

by Suresh Wadkar

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FrfhIyRTOoY

The easy thing about the song is that all the used notes are in Khamaj thaat ( except the instrumental interludes ) , the difficulty begins with determining the raag .
I would go for Gavati , since there is a part of the chorus which roughly corresponds to a part of the chalan outlined by Parrikar . I might be wrong though , and this similarity might be just a small hint on Gavati inserted into another raga .

" Aao Kanhaiya "

Brindavani Sarang , Bhajani taal

Gravitating to the khayal side because of the taans , the short lyrics and the absence of antiphonal structure .

http://songofmyheart-prakriti.blogspot. ... haiya.html

I can not find many bhajans in the Sarangs , at least not where it would be indicated in the song description .

" Shri Ramam charanam "

by Pandit Jasraj

Bhajani taal , antiphonal structure ( responsorial chorus ) , effective accelerando at the end .
Effective gradual inclusion of different hand cymbals ( karatalas , manjira etc ) towards the end , increasing the dramatism ...

Seems to be in Gujri Todi

" Sabse Oonchi Prem Sagai "

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J7F_H6hxYUg

~~~~~~~ Bhimpalasi
Sung by Pt. Jasraj , written by Surdas .
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surdas
Surdas (Sant Kavi Surdas) was a 15th century blind saint, poet and musician, known for his devotional songs dedicated to Lord Krishna. Surdas is said to have written and composed a hundred thousand songs in his magnum opus the 'Sur Sagar' (Ocean of Melody), out of which only about 8,000 are extant. He is considered a saint and so also known as Sant Surdas, a name which literally means the "slave of melody".
...
Influence --
On Bhakti movement --
The philosophy of Surdas is a reflection of the times. He was very much immersed in the Bhakti movement that was sweeping North India. This movement represented a grass roots spiritual empowerment of the masses. The corresponding spiritual movement of the masses happened in South India in the first millennium A.D. but also started in 17 age
On the status of Brij Bhasha --
Surdas' poetry was a dialect of Hindi language, Brij Bhasha, until then considered to be a very plebeian language, as the prevalent literary languages were either Persian or Sanskrit. The works of Surdas immediately raised the status of Brij Bhasha from a crude language to that of a literary language of great repute.
Philosophy --- Shuddhadvaita --
Due to the training he received from his guru Vallabhacharya, Surdas was a proponent of the Shuddhadvaita school of Vaishnavism (also known as Pushti Marg). This philosophy is based upon the spiritual metaphor of the Radha-Krishna Rasleela (The celestial dance between Radha and Lord Krishna). It propagates the path of Grace of God rather than of merging in Him, which seems an extension of the belief of earlier saints like Kabir Das.
Foremost amongst the Ashta-chhaap Eight Disciples of the Master-Teacher Vallabhacharya are called the Ashta-chhaap, meaning, eight reprints (of the Master). Surdas is considered to be the foremost among them.
" Shyam Sundar banwari "
by Ustad Rashid Khan
Quite slow , in Addha taal .
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Q3JLAyIgQg
On youtube-commentator asserts it is in raag Khamaj ; however I am not sure about this , because I hear Bihag-ang prominently present . Tivra Ma is heard throughout the piece .
I would say Bihagada , since it marries both angas .
" Prabhu mil jayenge "
Sung by Anup Jalota , Keherwa taal .
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wh_M851KRE8
After the classical/serious/grave bhajans , now something very easy and folksy . Without choir though .
The raag could be Maand ( all the swaras are in Bilawal thaat ) ; maybe some influence of Desh as there is some emphasis on Re ( though there is no komal ni ) .
" Kaha karun Vaikunthe "
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K6SAETr7aCs
Sung by Pandit Jasraj , Addha Taal , at the end double-time in Bhajani taal .
~~~~~~~~~ Kafi ( info comes with video description ) , Some instances of Shuddh Ni , which might point to Sindhura .
A small excursion into Kirwani at the end ( or maybe just Mishra Kafi employing Shuddh Ni and komal dha ... ) .
