Vilambit tempo

Postby StVitus » Fri Jan 13, 2017 6:58 pm

Wikipedia claims that the vilambit tempo is 10 to 40 beats per minute. Is that accurate? None of the books I check suggest a tempo, they just say “slow”.

The first introduction to vilambit leya is in aektaal
which has 12 maatras
but since it's so slow, several of the maatras are subdivided into 2 or 4 parts
a typical tempo for vilambit leya aektaal would be one maatraa a second
so about 60BPM
or one maatra in 2 seconds -- about 30BPM
so I would say it would be closer to 40 than to 10
Also, note that more critical than the tempo
is the fact that the rhythm interval is about 12 seconds or 24 seconds
For a beginner, it is difficult to run such a long rhtyhm interval in their minds
so vilambit leya is typically introduced much later in the learning process
A 16 beat teentaal by contrast might last 3 seconds.
