Warning - Spam on PM's

Postby Aanaddha » Thu May 07, 2009 11:30 am

Got a 'message' from 'profilicus' - "Forum Administration - important to read" with a link. My browser rejected the link - I'm certain it was spam or worse.
Delete it, don't open it.
If he could sing, and nature to accompany him, what need would he have for an instrument?

Got the same. I'm sure David will block the account once he sees this (or that) message.

Where are the moderators? Haven't heard from any of them for quite some time.

Dear Brothers and Sisters

This is just to let you know that "profilicus" account has been deactivated. However this does bring up a point that we have discussed before.

I do not know of anything that I can do to prevent this sort of thing from happening in the future. I have been toying with the idea of completely eliminating the PMs. It is my objective to run forms and not run an EMail service. However before I take this action I am looking for feedback in this matter.

Peace

Well, the PM's do allow us to keep from posting our email addresses ... any other alternatives??

(I don't really mind the occasional spam and glitch - there are far fewer here than I've seen elsewhere. And I'm running Windows Vista on a PC !! :o

Dont get rid of PMs.
They are very useful when you want to take a discussion out of the public forum to avoid silly controversy or when you want to give an email address to someone.
I think the occasional spammer trying to sell Viagra is not a huge danger.
You dont have to click on links in PMs.
They are pretty obvious when you get them.
Unless there is some HUGE Virus attack I think PMs are just fine.

I dont mind the limiting of PMs to one person only.
That is a good idea.
This will keep spammers from being able to easily spam everyone.
It would at least make it far more time consuming for the Spammer than it is worth.
