Private Messages limited

Post by david » Thu May 07, 2009 11:50 pm

While we assess the nature of PMs and this board I have been forced to apply some limits. From now on:

1) Only one recipient for any PM will be allowed.

2) Images will not be allowed in PMs.

Whether these changes are permanent, is something that we all should discuss.I am open to the possibility of simply disabling all PMs from the board.

I am looking to hear everyone's ideas.

Peace

David Courtney

David, I think the changes are quite reasonable. I would like to see PMs remain, in a simplified form as you suggest.

To my experience, the most useful aspect of PMs from this forum is that a PM allows the exchange of email addresses, avoiding the need to publish our email addresses. I have been exchanging emails with several people thanks to the PM system allowing us to privately exchange email addresses.

Dont get rid of PMs.
They are very useful when you want to take a discussion out of the public forum to avoid silly controversy or when you want to give an email address to someone.
I think the occasional spammer trying to sell Viagra is not a huge danger.
You dont have to click on links in PMs.
They are pretty obvious when you get them.
Unless there is some HUGE Virus attack I think PMs are just fine.

I dont mind the limiting of PMs to one person only.
That is a good idea.
This will keep spammers from being able to easily spam everyone.
It would at least make it far more time consuming for the Spammer than it is worth.

I used to belong to a paragliding/hang gliding forum and there was a rule if I remember that you had to have been a member for a certain period of time with a set number of posts before you were allowed to send PM's. Maybe there is a such a rule you can put in the programming, etc. for this forum?
You think people would have something better to do than this nonsense....

That sounds like a great idea. Makes perfect sense.

David, have a good look at this hacker, try to get to bottom of this. I got a spam message in my inbox yesterday for a username I discarded long ago , it is not even listed anymore. This suggests to me that this guy got deep into the innards of your database.
Best of luck with sorting this out.

I am feeling neglected and unwanted. I have received no spam PMs. What am I doing wrong :?

Seriously, it is beginning to sound, as is the case with much email spam, that someone has received a list historical rather than presently active, so any hacking may be in the past rather than now.

In which case I think the minimal action to reduce could be appropriate, your suggestion David seems fine. If there is a lurking spammer's membership then the suggestion of minimum of time period for membership may be irrelevant.

It does not appear to be a hack. The entire action seems to have been done strictly from the outside by using normal PM function. It appears to have been a bot though. Even though I have placed limits on PMs a bot could still circumvent this.

The term"Private Message" says it: "private" implies hidden from "public." If you want the message to go out to a large number of forum members, post it to the forum in an appropriate area.

Maybe we can all have a particular password to post PMs???
That would mean non solicited PMs will be rejected from the start.
