New Spam Fighting Tools

Postby david » Tue Aug 02, 2011 10:19 pm

This is just to let everyone know that we have been working "Under the hood" to make this forum more resistant to spam. Here is what has been added.

1) Recaptcha - This is a third party captcha (those little graphics where you need to type in the code), that is supposed to be much better than the stock one for phpBB.

2) Akismet (Professional version) - This automatically checks all registrations against a list of known spammers.

Now any time we go diddling around with things under the hood, there is always a possibility things might not work properly. If anyone has any problem, drop me some email to let me know what is happening.

argh captcha!
That's cool, hopefully it will stop a lot of it. Good work David.

EDIT: is it just on registration? I was thinking it would be for every forum post.

Must just be on for registration, which I appreciate...a few sites I comment on require captcha for every last post, which gets tiresome...they even sometimes have ads or video ads you have to watch and then type in a phrase from the ad.

If you can catch them at the initial registration point that's definitely best. Thanks David, this forum is a wonderful resource and I find myself spending altogether too much time here, so I appreciate it! :D

I will say, the one good thing for spammers...every now and then they will randomly unearth a very old thread that I never would have seen or searched for that makes for interesting reading! But that's more me finding the silver lining of it all...

You point is well taken about the unearthing of interesting threads.

I think that it would be completely in line if once or twice a week you dug down deep into old posts and resurrected something. We do not have to depend upon spammers to do it for us.

What about a 'random thread' button in each of the boards? I've seen this on other forums. You click the button and it takes you to a random thread in that board. No spammers needed!

Yes, It definitely seems to be keeping the spam at bay. Let us hope that it is not keeping legitimate new users out.

Shall I start advertising some porn just to keep everyone on their toes?

Well, perhaps in a PM to select individuals?

Akismet wouldn't allow my post just now, I'm not a spammer and didn't say anything bad :(
