Vintage Hemen One Piece Sarod For Sale

Post by trippy monkey » Sat Apr 06, 2013 2:54 pm

This genuine Hemen one piece sarod was found in Amritsar of all places. Although the body is in very good condition we had to have the fingerboard replated due to loads of use & the skin replaced as it had split on one side.
A few pegs have been replaced too. It also has its original toombi.

Any sensible offers over 35 thousand rupees please. I've had a good padded bag & box made for travel.
Postage is extra according to where it gets sent.
This is the link to pics on Dropbox. I'll be still in Varanasi for just over 2 weeks so get your skates on, please!!!!!

Still for sale?

I'm in australia so shipping might be a bit pricey, but I'm keen!

Sorry, it's going to a Serbian friend in July. He decided to take it after a sarangi deal didn't come off in Varanasi when I was in India recently.

Thanks for the enquiry though.
Actually my friend in Varanasi, who originally found this, is going again to Amritsar in a few days so I'll keep you all posted as to what he finds there. He then goes over to Kolkatta & WHO knows what treasures he'll get there?!!?

Are you sure this is a Hemen? I've seen many "vintage" (early to mid to late 60s) Hemen sarods, and this is very different. I see the the Hemen tag on the tail piece but am still not convinced. You should take it to Hemens shop and have them verify it before buying it Nick.

Hemen or not, it is a beautiful instrument on it's own. It looks very old and seasoned. You're lucky to find such a piece. Would love to hear how it sounds

I know how to judge the sound of a sitar but how do you do that with a sarod as they all seem to have quite good full resonance???

I feel sarod tones are a personal choice! there's no one "perfect" or preferred tone. It all depends on the individual. I've heard people who are fans of amjad ali khan love his tone and not so much the tone of ali akbar khan. The same could be said in reverse. Both have completely different tones. I personally have a affinity for the tone of Pandit Vasant Rai, because i feel he has best of both the worlds. Warm yet clean and crisp. It all depends on what you are drawn to.
