Rare music by Vasant Rai on the radio

Post by lakshman » Mon Jul 29, 2013 5:43 am

Hi everyone,

I'll be presenting a special radio show tomorrow on Skidmore College radio, WSPN 91.1 FM or online at http://www.skidmore.edu/wspn, featuring very rare recordings of Pandit Vasant Rai, the last student of Allaudin Khan. Many of these recordings have never been heard by the public, and come from the personal collections of Vasantji's family and students. The show will be from 10-12 PM EST, and will be the last episode of my show, Music of the Mughal Court (https://www.facebook.com/pages/Music-of ... 135?ref=hl) for some time, as I move to London next week to pursue a Master's in sarod performance.

Tune in! This is a very rare opportunity to hear recordings of one of the greatest sarod players to have ever lived.

Saw this post after the radio program unfortunately. I just love the playing of Pandit Vasant Raijee. In my opinion he was the best sarod player and musician.

This reminds me of a film by shahrukh khan "My name is Khan" here he is facing adversaries because of his name. The irony is if Vasantjee's last name was Khan then his rare recordings would be precious. Indian music is very dynastic especially the Sarod. On one side is Hafiz Ali Khans lineage namely Amjad Ali Khan and on the other side is Allauddin khans linage Ali Akbar Khan and anyone outside of this really does not matter in the eyes of the public. The situation is bipolar on the whole, the no namers in between will barely surive by playing here and there and getting the leftovers but they too must announce the greatness and pledge alliance to two either of the two greats to be accepted. I'm not at all suggesting that both the khans were not good players they were phenomenal but I believe Vasant Rai and Radhika Mohan Maitra were just on par but they do not get a fraction of the respect or benefit as the formers. This is the misfortune of Indian classical music were value is attached primarily to name. This is not true in Western classical music where artists are given respect based on merit not lineage. A Zubin Mehta does not need to be the son or grand son of so and so to be accepted. The reason ICM is a unpopular and dying art is because of this clanish mentality. Being in academia this type of mentality is especially disturbing to a rational mind.
