Off Again & Something For The Weekend, Friends!!!

Postby trippy monkey » Wed Nov 04, 2009 11:33 am

Well here we go again!! :D

I SHOULD be flying on sunday morning for Delhi but my visa hasn't arrived yet. I'll be there for just short of 6 months!
We'll see what treasures Her Most Gracious & PATIENT Majesty India will allow me to discover this time. :)
Of course I'll keep you all informed as to what's going on.

I'll try my best to get an invite to Pt Ravi Shankar's 90th Birthday Celebrations if they both decide to have some in Delhi!!! OR GATECRASH!!!!!!

I've uploaded a few more goodies from my vinyl/VHS collection, links below.....

This is how learned to count to 20 in Spanish. From vintage Sesame Street.

Anyone know the Sarod player on this? From 70s vinyl The Tribe.

http://www.mediafire.com/?zg0nhwznimn

An amusing use of voices alongside a tabla player from 70s Brit TV. Ustad AAK????

I've got a very amusing mental-image of you gatecrashing Panditji's celebrations...

Good luck with the visa & have fun!!!

Slight mistake with the Sesame St clip. THAT one's in English but they had 2 & the other one was in Spanish & there I learned 1-20!
Re the visa, I just found out today the the Indian High Commission have started processing it on the 4th despite the fact I took the passport in last thursday dated 29th oct.

Some more stuff...
Kalpana
Has the late great Ustad Lateef Ahmed Khan on tabla, Sri Mrinal Sen Gupta on sarod & Kathak dancer Tirath Ajmani.

Singh Bandhu the underrated Sikh classical vocalist duo.

I'll try to get as many more as I can uploaded before I go.

Yo Tripster! I know you'll have a swell (do people still say "swell"?) time! Really looking forward to the reports and some instruments to marvel at. And photos. Lots of photos!

Trippy,

Any chance of asking you to keep a special eye open for rare tabla solos?

First Lars.
We do have a strange relationship with India!!!! Tourists can only get 6 month visas. Any longer & we have to 'vacate' India & refresh from places such as Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka etc. Many other types of visa are available such as working & business.

Pov
Damn right I'll be posting LOTS of pics & see what my bloodhound nose can sniff out this time. I was supposed to visit an old Bengali gent's house to see an old Rudra Veena & old Surbahar. Will push it this time. What?!?!? ME PUSHY!?!?!!??!?

Tablafreak
Do you mean CDs of rare tabla or concerts etc???? Like the Kanai Dutt one from last time??

Bit more stuff from the vaults...
First
The Pt Ravi Shankar bits from a bootleg of George Harrison's Hari's On Tour 1974. Also some clips from an included DVD with the 2 CDs. First link the video.

Stupid computer isn't letting me put the audio tracks on, will try tomorrow.

The 'rare' musical interludes in stereo from The Beatles movie 'Help!'
I believe it's the Batish family. Sounds like them?!!?!?!

Pt Ravi Shankar & Ustad Ali Akbar Khan 1972 live concert. I think THIS CD release is long out of print due to a very limited availability. Even the recent vinyl goes for top money on Ebay never mind the original issue.

http://www.mediafire.com/?jdwywzhnbmm

A short sound clip with BOOMPHY tabla sound of Raviji on a late 70s visit to the UK as stated in the clip.

http://www.mediafire.com/?yjoo5twuyod

RASA. The album with Sri Krishna Bhatt & Jody Stecher, with the vinyl sleeve scans too.

Great work Trippy.

BTW - Hope you know that the Sawai Gandharva Music Festival in Pune has been postponed this year due to the swine flu scare. Now scheduled for the 10th of Jan. Do try and make it there. 4 days of enthralling bliss.

cheers

FIRST post from Delhi!!!!

Here's what happened before I'd even got on the plane at Manchester airport...
Got to the airport & an over cautious security guard, after supposedly detacting a bloody H Bomb in my bag, decided to empty my full backpack. I DID have rather a lot of electrical type wires & hardware though!! Had a young women trying to help me to the leaving terminal but as we arrived I was told the gate had closed. Of course I argued the point about being delayed but was told I'd have to rebook another flight! BOLLOX TO THAT thinks I but the captain must have taken pity as I had no bags to put back in the plane, only my backpack with me. A nearby guy with a mobile type thingy said the captain could hold off for another 8 mins so I, slightly RED FACED, got on & off we went. I explained to a few people about the bloody security guard & then parked my arse. I never got out of it all the way to Qatar, about 6-7 hours. DIdn't dare, I think!!!

Fly to Varanasi on the 17th & will have some interesting sitar pics to show. The 'Travel' sitar has now emerged as the full decorated type as opposed to the plainer VK one before
VERY tempting & very well priced. If anyone is seriously interested in one & can maybe pay me through PAYPAL or something, I'll what I can do...

I thought it might be better if I carry THIS thread rather than start another!
See if this link takes you to some pics I took at my Pahar Ganj 'dealer' Shan's place.

There's shots of several new decorated versions of the Travel/Electric sitar.
