Question about MKS sitar at Kala Kendar

Postby theactor10 » Fri Apr 13, 2012 9:37 pm

Hey guys,

I'm about to make my first sitar purchase from kala kendar. I actually live in toronto, so I'm going to go in and try some out. I was hoping to spend like 700 or 800.. something around there.

I have never played sitar, but I am a guitarist, with a passion for music and will learn sitar, and am devoted to making that happen. So I want a quality instrument.

Wants: Ravi Shankar (KP) tuning, Tone: warm, deep, hypnotizing, loud. I don't like a very thin or treble-y kind of sound.

So kala kendar has a Monoj Kumar Sardar Premium Sitar. Here is the link:

Let me know what you guys think of it, if its a good quality sitar. I haven't found any info online on this particular model. If you have any other recommendations from Kala Kendar, please let me know with some info as to why.

Thanks so much for your guys help!!

Well, one thing is for sure, you are going to test drive a few before buying, which is the optimum thing to do. The general rule of thumb is to be able to buy the best sitar that you can afford.

You seem to be determined, so that too, is a plus. I hope you have thought about a teacher, as well. While being a guitar player is a plus, having a teacher is top priority. I'm a guitar player as well, but my hand technique on sitar was painful, due to the fact that I had no teacher at first to show me the correct way to play, so keep that in mind.

I'm sure the regular crowd will step up and tell you more about your particular choice in sitars. If I were you, however, I'd opt for a hard case. A gig bag is convenient for going from short place to short place, but any type of travel beyond that and you'll be glad you invested in a hard shell.

That's my opinion and I'm sticking to it...

Good luck with your new baby!
Epoxy or glue? That is the question....

Sorry but being a guitar player is NOT a plus IMO.
It makes the learner do all kinds of weird things they think sitar music is.
Every guy I've seen pick up a sitar with NO lessons & has been a guitar player, has done all the same things like fingers across the frets, that little booiinnggg sound as they do what they think is a sitar decoration & use their thumbs to pluck the chikari.

I hope you can overcome this when you learn. All else good though! Honest!!
