Chaitsingh Gurbaxsingh Sitar help

Post by Jojolefthishome » Thu Nov 24, 2016 4:18 am

Hello everyone. I was hoping someone could tell me something about this sitar. It's owned by my guru who got it with a sensational story about it's previous owner, which of course can't be verified. Still it's a very interesting instrument. Specifically I'm wondering about it's age and the story behind the maker. It's made by Chaitsingh Gurbaxsingh who I'm not familiar with and a google search comes up lacking. Can anyone shed some light on this one? Thanks in advance!

My sitar has the same sort of tabli decoration, which is simply curled celuloid glued on with a decorative flower at the end, rather than the traditional carving. It also has the decorative flowers at the tips of the patri which you don't see so often these days. When I asked about it here a few years ago the general consensus was that it was a Miraj instrument from the 60's. Mine has no maker's name.

But I'm always interested to see other instruments with that type of decoration. I guess it's much cheaper and easier than the carved decoration, but I kinda like it.

Jay -- Would you please post more photos of this sitar? Very interested to see various parts from various angles, including overall. Thanks!

Next time I'm at my guru's place I'll snap some more. He tried several years ago and came up empty so I said I'd give it a try.

Yes, it's very dusty from sitting for a few years but it's all there. Nothing a bit of elbow grease can't fix. Of course it will need Jawari work and strings. It will be getting some love very soon. We just wanted to know more about it.

There is an article about cleaning a sitar in very similar shape to your's on the Sitar Factory Site
