I want to see and hear a Mohan Lal Sitar!

Post by MatSitar » Sat Jan 14, 2017 6:56 pm

Hey!

I watched a trillion times the Teak Mohan Lal video on the sitarjunkie channel ( Thank you Lars by the way :) ) and I'm curious if anybody have another video or music file that could make me hear and see one of these beauties!

Thank you

Mathieu

Hi there!

I just posted a thread where I share some recordings of a recent performance I gave.
I play a Mohan Lal concert teak sitar (full carving, upper gourd, not munda).
Sound quality (of the recordings) is not the best, but I think you can still hear the quality of the instrument.

I received this from Lars a few months ago, so it is still breaking in. However, it is a lovely sitar. Incredible sustain, very sweet in the higher range, and has a full sound in the lower range. Nice resonance and response through the entire range - a balanced instrument. I have owned a handful of sitars over the past 10 years and this is my favorite by far. It will be my primary instrument for a long time to come.

Because of the nature of the wood, pegs can be an issue at times, but nothing a little chalk can't fix. The fitting is some of the best work that I have seen, as is the setup on the entire instrument.

I may be able to get some pictures up later, but it is a lighter finish than the one posted on Rain City, and has different carvings and classic red/black pen work.

Hey, thanks for the nice comment.
Indeed, the sitar is very smooth and a joy to play.

Here are some photos (credit goes to Lars):
