right leg position

Post by themodestokid » Sun Jan 22, 2017 9:19 pm

While practicing this morning, I found a new way of sitting that I really like -- I am holding the gourd of the sitar on my left foot; my right leg is bent so the sole of my right foot is on the floor and my calf and knee are nestled into the corner of the gourd and the neck. This means I can hold the instrument in position between my right leg and my left foot, letting my right arm rest lightly on the top of the gourd. Previously I had been using my right arm to put some pressure on the instrument to hold it in place; this is much more comfortable and gives me a lot more freedom in my picking finger's motion.

I find I do that also at times and I've seen others do it as well. The only thing is you have to be careful when playing those high notes, your knee can get in the way.
