New Project -- Kartar Chand

Post by katyrow » Fri Feb 17, 2017 3:57 am

Arrived today. Broken main peg. Bridge epoxied to tabli. Broken chikari post. Some loose binding. Good neck joint. No visible tumba repair. Someone loved this instrument and played it a lot. 1970s? Scott H, if your are checking in, can you tell us when it was made? Will post updates.

Hard to really pin down a date, but seeing a hand etched badge, real celluloid mother of toilet seat trim and scratch plate, monofilament fishline fret ties, degree of wear, I would make a ball park guess this beauty as being made sometime in the late 60's. Here's yet another one I'd love to get my paws on. Enjoy it ! ! !

The tall main bridge legs suggest the tabli is well angled down from the neck - excellent ! ! ! The bone tips on the tumba leaves also smack of the 60's ! ! !

Thanks Tony! To me, the heavy wear pictured below from moving the frets for different rags is the real tell on age and also gives a little insight into what kind of player owned it.

Done. This thing is a monster. Perhaps the most balance sound of any sitar I've played. The jawari is closed. It has a creamy, bell-like tone. The chikaris remind me of the tines on a Fender Rhodes. It didn't need much: clean and light french polish, replace broken c-post, fret polish, repair broken main peg, replace a couple of broken grommets, restring, close up jawari. Selected the tuning beads based on the colors of the wood and MOP.

Looks very nice. I also have a Hari Chand RS style sitar. My very first sitar was a VK Hari Chand.

Is this a genuine Hari Chand? I never saw one with such a name plate. Normally it is the 'handwritten' style name tag.:

I was talking about the sitar in the link not your sitar. Never saw a Hari Chand sitar without the hand etched tag. So I am wandering if the sitar in the link is genuine?

I'm sorry Barend. I misread your post. The one in the link looks fake to me.

I've seen quite a few of them and never saw the plated version, was always a hand made label. I was lucky enough to hang with Hari Chand in his shop a few times before it closed but he told me he had just been fitting Calcutta bodies as it was easier for him. Really nice guy, hope he's enjoying retirement up North.
