Are surbahars with big tumbas still made?

Post by StVitus » Sat Mar 04, 2017 2:12 am

Does anyone still make surbahars with the classic huge tumbas? Like the massive instrument Irshad Khan uses? All the information I see about sitars online show the smaller modern style. But that’s just what I see on the English internet.

This may be a case where the instrument looks larger because of the size of the player. Ive never met Irshad ji but if i had to guess from the video he is about 5'2".

The surbahar on the youtube clip looks big because the neck isn't so long. I have a recently made more 'full-size' one I play when I'm in Varanasi, north India & IT has a more usual large toomba.
