Kirya wrote: Raga-s are not “composed” by any particular musician. Their origins are mostly indeterminate. They evolve over a period of time from a variety of source melodies as plausible triggers for well-defined categories of emotional responses.
But some ragas are definitely created by certain personalities and their origins are well documented. For example, the raga Jogkauns was the invention of Jagannath Purohit Gunidas in the 20th century.
If there are just ''six tones'' in an octave [sic] then why have frets for tones that don't exist?

Charju ki Malhar is another example. Created by Nayak Charju of Gwalior Gharana.

There is an interesting discussion on Shruti vs Swar in this paper that provides many different perspectives on this issue

This is a very intellectual and to me overly abstract delve into what Raag is but some may find it useful.

I think that while it is useful to be able to talk about Raag it can get to a point where the words become so obtuse and the ideas so opaque that it has almost nothing to do with the music anymore. It is like talking about mountains like the Himalayas by discussing rock composition and rock inclines and counting precipices.
