Should I learn Tabla and Harmonium? (and introduction)

Postby Kodi » Fri Apr 07, 2017 11:57 am

Hello everyone, my name is Cody, I'm 21 years old and I am a guitar player of 9 years and guitar teacher. Always had a love for ICM and have been wondering if I should pick up a second instrument. I heard knowing some Tabla and Harmonium will be helpful to solidify rhythm and theory. Is that necessary? I'm also concerned about practice. If I choose to play an Indian instrument, how would you suggest I divide my practice time to continue praciticing guitar and also reaching a proficient level at my second instrument? Thanks for taking the time and look forward to reading your thoughts.

@Kodi

It is not really necessary to learn harmonium
since it uses the same set of notes as a guitar.
You could learn the theory of raga instead
which would give you some ideas on melody and composition.

Tabla is a good instrument to learn for hand-drumming
but it's got a steep learning curve
and it's pretty boring at the beginning

Another instrument you could possibly consider is the sarod
Ustad Amjad Ali Khan and his 2 sons are popular contemporary sarod players.
The sarod is shaped just like a guitar but it doesn't have frets.
It might be difficult to find an instructor though since it's not very popular
