Carnatic overview

Postby cwroyds » Sun Jan 03, 2016 7:20 pm

Hey all,

I have a musician friend who is going to india to participate in a workshop for Carnatic music.
I was thinking he would do well to have a basic understanding of the music.
Could anyone suggest a good source for an overview of Carnatic music?

He is a masterful musician in other genres, so he is perfectly capably of understanding complex musical concepts.
The overview I am looking for can be in depth musically.
Any suggestions are appreciated.

I'm not a carnatic musician, but as a person who spent a night trying to explain the difference between carnatic and hindustani music, the best thing to do is to read up on concepts from Wikipedia or other places about raga and the melakarta system, be fluent in sargam (sa, re, ga), understand general terms like gamak/gamagam, shruti, and listen to a lot of the music analytically.

Saw the sarcasm and had to reply

Cheers

LOL... Sarcasm?... What sarcasm.... :)
I was just in a snippy mood.
I wasn't surprised at no reply as some areas of this forum get no traffic at all.

Thanks for the reply.
Funny thing is that when he got back from India it turned out that it was Hindustani music he was learning about.
I could have given him a primer lesson, but I thought it would be Carnatic music.
Oh well, all is well that ends well.
He had a great time.

Yeah, some subforums are clearly more active than others. Glad your friend had a good time.

Best,
Robert
