Making a bridge for a saraswati veena

Post by nhveena » Sat Sep 01, 2012 8:50 pm

Hello all:
I'm making a bridge for my saraswati veena that I picked up a few days ago, and I'm wondering about the curved brass bridge off to the side that supports the drone strings. It's hard to tell from pictures online, but I am assuming that the bridge makes contact with the soundboard of the instrument. I have a piece of brass to make it from. Would it just be the cut off end of the metal that would be in contact with the soundboard, or would the metal curve up? I'm concerned that it might buzz, although I suppose that might be the purpose. I'd appreciate any thoughts.

I think I found my answer on a website of a maker. You can clearly see a small wooden foot that goes between the brass bridge and the soundboard.

I recently had a bronce sand-cast replica made of a curved bridge for the Talam-strings for a Sarasvati Veena. I have seen the book of South-Indian Veena making on the work of master Palaniappan, who indeed makes a wooden extension on the side of the bridge that provides a firm seating of the down-side of the bridge. Otherwise I've seen these bridges resting on a rim at the top side part of the bridge, the lower part sitting on the tabli straightaway. If the angle is correctly filed so it fits dead on, it should be ok.

Hello Kaiyara,

Here is a link to my photo page where you can see many pictures of instruments etc. At the very top you'll find lots of pics of a sarasvati veena that I restored to playing condition. The talam bridge is also clearly visible on many pics, have look:

ps these pics are public and you can download them straight off the site.
