Pickups on Carnatic Instuments

Does anybody have insight into why Carnatic instrumentalists are more apt to use pickups (magnetic or piezo) while Hindustani musicians tend to mic the instruments. I'm sure its a its done as a matter of convention, convenience and control over sound. I prefer the acoustic tone of the instruments though. Just a pet peeve of mine, especially when you hear the discrepancy in tone at north/south jugulbandis. Anybody know the history of this or have any technical background info?

I've wondered this as well, because Saraswati veena players seem to very often use magnetic or contact pickups which seem to give a very middy, dark tone, compared to the brilliant highs of a well mic'ed sitar. One could say that lacking the sympathetic strings and bone jawari, a veena is going to have less in the way of all those transient overtones and chirpy treble details to the tone, so less is lost by going with mag pickups.

Also, musicians in the south seem more quick to adapt and adopt new instruments. First time I heard Carnatic saxophone I was both mortified and amused...and then, impressed!
