Carnatic Concert NW Indiana - March 28

Post by Hamletsghost » Wed Mar 25, 2009 12:49 am

Sorry for this late posting & very little info - I just got the call to do sound for a Carnatic Music event this Saturday evening March 28th, at the Indian American Cultural Center 8506 Merrillville Rd. Merrillville Indiana (about 45 min from Chicago) I do not have much info. All I know right now is it is a musical event featuring members of Lalgudi Jayaraman & Lalgudi Krishnan's family. I don't know which members are on tour right now, but as I have worked numerous times with this illustrious family and their relatives, it should be quite an event indeed. For more information try to call the center @ 219-395-8609. I will try to get more info tomorrow, if I can, & will post any updates.

 WOW - JUST GOT THE INFO

And what a show indeed.

This will be a 5 piece orchestra led by Lalgudi Vijayalaksmi - Daughter and disciple of the legendary Lalgudi Jayaraman on violin. I have worked with this world class Carnatic violinist on numerous occasions and she is a treat every time. BUT this time out it's something very different. Not only do we have violin but this is amazing:
VIOLIN - VEENA - FLUTE - MRIDANGAM - MORCHING !!
All Women
“VADYA SUNADHA SANGAMAM"
A Unique Indian Classical Instrument Ensemble

From the Flyer:
The violin veena venu as a combination was introduced by the ledgendary Lalgudi Jayaraman in the 60's. He made this combination of instruments the violin a bowing instrument, the venu or flute which is a blowing instrument and the veena a plucked instrument as each has a different tenor timbre, tone and range and when combined in unison, it is pure melody.

Performers:

Lalgudi Vijayalakshmi is the, daughter and disciple of the
great maestro Sri Lalgudi Jayaraman. She is a leading
exponent of the Lalgudi style, which is characterized by
boundless innovation while strictly adhering to the tradition
and eloquently capturing the mood and essence of any
composition. Along with her brother Lalgudi Krishnan, she
has been diligent going about the task of maintaining the
stylistic grandeur and singularity of the Lalgudi tradition.
Vijayalakshmi has played in many countires across the
globe and also has the credit of leading a music ensemble of
the Violin, the Venu or flute and the Veena in over 50
concerts all over India.

Flautist Sikkil Mala Chandrasekhar continues in the
tradition of her famous gurus, the Sikkil Sisters Padmashri,
Sangeetha Kalanidhi Kunjumani and Neela. Other major
influences on Mala's playing are the expertise and
repertoire of noted vocalist and teacher Radha
Viswanathan and of Radha's mother and guru
M.S.Subbulakshmi whose family Mala joined by marriage.
Mala concertizes throughout India and abroad (USA,
Singapore, Middle East, Europe, London and Mauritius)

Jayashree Jairaj belongs to the Shishya Parampara of
Nadajyoti Sri Muthuswamy Dikshitar - who is one among the
famous Musical Trinity of Carnatic Music. Jayahsree started
learning music at a very young age. Her first concert was at the
age of 11. An A grade artist of AIR Chennai, she has the rare
distinction of being promoted to the A grade directly from B
Grade, without going through B High. She is married to JT
Jeyaraaj Krishnan and she and her husband present concerts
together as a Veena Duet in the Carnatic music firmament.

Ms. Rajna Swaminathan, disciple of Mridangam Maestro Sri
Umayalpuram K. Sivaraman, is an upcoming young artiste in the
field of Carnatic percussion. She started learning Mridangam from
her father Dr. P. K. Swaminathan at the age of 5. Since 1999, when
Rajna was only 8 years old, the Maestro made several lengthy visits
to the Swaminathan residence in Maryland, USA and trained her
personally to be his protege. She has accompanied various top
artists. She is among the youngest and one of only a handful of
female mridangam artistes in the world.

Bhagyalakshmi Muralikrishna hails from a musical family.
Her father, Karnataka Kalashree 'Gaana Kala Bhushana' Vidwan
Shri L. Bhimachar is the greatest exponent of Morching in India.
Bhagyalakshmi has performed in many concerts in India. She
has toured with a woman ensemble to countries like Egypt,
Algeria, etc. She has performed in various international musical festivals.

IF you can make it this should be one to remember. Hope to see you Saturday.
