Buying a Mridangam online?

Post by glorplaxy » Tue May 26, 2009 5:30 pm

Where is the best place to buy a mridangam online? Are the mridangams from Raj Musicals any good?

If you're talking about a S. Indian jackwood mridangam - I wouldn't trust any of the
N. Indian shops. Not that they're dishonest . . . but they're all ignorant as to how to discern a good one from a bad one. I've bought many of them via Delhi shops and they've always been very disappointing, too small, old skins, not even close to being in tune - and we've just sold them off cheap as beginner drums. Only after 6 years of trial and error have I found a source for real professional quality S.Indian mridangams.

Try Chennai based Shruthilaya or Sapthaswara. Both have web sites.

I have bought mridangams from both shops. They were absolute crap.
Believe me or don't. :D
