Keeping Taal

Post by omja » Fri Mar 12, 2010 3:21 pm

If this topic is covered elsewhere I apologise in advance.

i play tabla, i have an understanding of how taal is established and maintained using tabla. at its simplest taals can be expressed using Theka, Sam provides a taal reference point, khali and tali seperate sections of the theka and Tehai rounds off a piece and importantly identifies an end point.
Clapping is a way of marking out taal as well as establishing muscle memory. my education and style are both rooted in the north indian classical hindustani tradition.

My question is this.............how does one approach taal in the canartic tradition?
