A Detail on Vinas

Postby David Russell Watson » Mon May 16, 2011 11:41 pm

Please take a look at the photos of a vīṇā at http://coyotespaw.com/Detailed/52.html , especially the second from the left at the bottom of the page. If you click on it you'll get an enlarged version at the top of the page.

There's something on the soundboard between the two rosettes that looks to me a lot like those bells on the counters at some businesses that you ring when you want service. :D

I've seen the same thing on a few other pictures of vīṇās besides this one.

What is that, and what's it for, can anybody tell me?

It is a covering for a sound hole. If you take it off you have a sound hole. If you put the cover back. Then there is no sound hole. It acts as sort of a tone control.
