Post by antiago » Fri Jun 10, 2011 6:17 pm

This is the gallery of my instrument:

Do you know if it has a value?
Is it a good piece?
Can someone tell me some information about?

I want to sell it, but have no idea how much.

It is a Saraswati Veena. South Indian style used for Carnatic music . I have no idea of the quality but it looks better than the made for export junk one sometimes sees.

PS - tucking this in the Carnatic section but will leave a pointer.

It is called "Vichitra Veena", a modification of Saraswati Veena. It is basically from Southern India. If you want to sell it or buy any kind of Indian Musical String Instrument, please contact us <muskan_22121@yahoo.co.in>
OR visit to website rudraveena.org - links - Saraswati Tanty Vadya Kendra.

You are probably thinking of the Chitra Veena or Gottuvadyam. Chitra Veena is a South Indian instrument that looks like a Saraswati veena. The difference is the Chitra Veena has sympathetic strings and no frets. The Saraswati veena has frets but no sympathetic strings.

The image pictured in Antiago's post is a Saraswati veena. It has frets and has no sympathetic strings.

Vichitra veena is a North indian instrument that looks similar to a rudra vin except it also has no frets and has sympathetic strings.

Both Vichitra and Chitra veenas are played similarly, with the instrument sitting horizontally on the floor and a metal or glass slide slid across the strings.

Oh my god, the mine is exactly like the Chitra Veena. Really the same design!

Are they instruments of value, particular pieces or not? Iam not able to comprehend I can earn 500 or less euros.
Forgive me, I'm in ignorance. I play drums, I'm trying to sell my Veena to buy an acoustic drums.
And I wouldkeep the Veena in my house, but the style is so far from the rest.
And I think it's a pity to release this Veena on a box.

Sorry for my really bad english, maybe a beer more this evening.

Antiago - your instrument is NOT like the Chitra veena. It is similar in decoration but two things make it not a Chitra veena.

1) Your instrument has frets. The Chitra does not have frets.

2) Your instrument does not have tarafs (thinner sympathetic strings under the main strings.) In the picture I posted you can see the sympathetic strings represented by all of the extra tuning pegs down the body.

You have a Saraswati Veena. It is not a bad thing. There are a LOT more Saraswati Veena players than Chitra Veena players. So chances of selling it are greater.
