String Gauge and Materials

Post by yussef ali k » Mon Sep 26, 2011 1:04 am

Hi All,
I'd appreciate some help in learning about the strings as commonly used on the South-Indian Vina.
Thank you in advance.

Hi All. This's a post-scriptum to my above post:

I think strings are a very important thing on the 'timbre-equation' and comparatively among the most overlooked in literature (and, allow me to add, even by Indian musicians).
Also, today's quality of strings is much better & there are more choices:

Am trying to get a better pic of what's available in terms of
-Gauge and Materials.
The SCALE LENGTH (= string vibrating part) measurement on your saraswati-vina would also be a plus.

So, input from all is valuable and appreciated:please help, & discuss, discuss, discuss.

Thank You in advance, and especially the people who already took their time to answer (See also Surbahar & RudraVina threads).

Hi,
Given the overwhelming reaction to this thread, I'm sure that posting a link to S. Balachander's string Gauge-Materials plus some techniques, etc will be a much-welcomed update! :-)

Add knowledge to this if you please: will be much appreciated.
Have fun.
