Violin/Viola Strings

Post by bhava » Wed Jun 12, 2013 7:59 am

Dear, Namaste,

I will be learning to play Hindu style Violin (playing raga) I was curious which style strings are being used in this manner. I was told Viola strings were used, is this correct? And what is the general tuning?

In advance, thank you for any information. I would love to meet someone who likes to play ragas on the Violin.

Hi, the relative tuning of a violin for ICM will be sa pa sa' pa' or sa ma sa' ma'. The actual pitch tuned to will vary to whether you accompany a vocalist, in which case the pitch of the vocalist is adapted. In the other case, you're pretty free. Seen that tunings will differ from standard practice, you'd have to adjust string gauges accordingly, which will take some experimenting, no doubt.
So better hang on until a violinist joins you for an answer.
regards, martin
