Pt. RAMNARAYANJI 78 RPM DISCS (1950)

Post by DrKashyap » Tue Aug 27, 2013 3:32 am

Here is very rare recording of PadmaVibhushan Pt. Ramnarayanji playing solo sarangi in 1950 for 78 rpm disc. Pt,ji is fit even today in his 80s, same jolly with occasional naughty nature. He has seen the evolution of Sarangi from faceless sarangi player to the leader.Govt or NGOs should try to take advantage of his rich knowledge & experience by arranging his lec-dem or promoting scholarship to sarangi aspirants. Here he plays raag Marva & Lalit. Panditji, keep on blessing us !!

The buddhu people of Padma committee haven't given him the Bharat Ratna yet. Such a shame that most of India has turned it's back on classical music.
Next concert: Aditya Sharma (today)
Sandipan Samajpati (9/28)
Shubhendra Rao (10/19)
Rakesh & Friends (Gino Banks, the drummer, tweeted me that they'll be in Oct, so whenever they come here, if they come here.)
Zakir Hussain & company (3/23/14)

Perhaps it's just the recording, but his style seems to have been a little smoother less dramatic back then, I like it- I do recognize his taste in taans-

Dr Kashyap wrote that "he plays with metalstrings here".
Interesting.
Dr Kashyap, Do you know what type of metal strings he used?
Plain or wound? Steel or bronze etc.?

Plain steel string. One needs some practice of bowing to shift from gut to metal & vice versa. In some of the old vid/pics of sarangi you will find a metal string coiled & attached to string holder at the bottom for easy change over.
