Music recommendations

Post by Nick B » Mon Sep 01, 2014 1:11 pm

Can any forum-ites recommend some good listening for esraj, dilruba, taus. There is some stuff on youtube, but I wanted to get some better quality recordings (which hopefully enrich the artist!).

There seems to be a total dearth of cds or downloads available from amazon, but then I am searching using keywords rather than any knowledge of artists etc. So personal recommendations would be great.

Your thoughts, as always, appreciated :D

Wow - is that tumbleweed I hear rolling through vitat-gulch?

I guess it confirms my fears that there is not much to access. However, in my search I have uncovered one wonderful piece of music which I thought I would share with you all:

Shubhayu Sen Majumdar - Ahir which has a really beautiful Ahir Bhairav on it.

He has also released an album on Dilruba which is also nice, but the esraj pips it for me.

Both are available on Amazon....

Still keen to hear any other suggestions 8)

Sarangi guy myself, I could steer you to MANY hours of excellent sarangi recordings, but unfortunately ignorant of dilruba/esraj...

Dear all

Just had to share this (which Dr K put me on to), the Jaunpuri is, for me, one of the most amazing pieces of music I have heard in a long time:

Ranadhir Roy's bilashkhan todi is worth listening to. Anindo Chatterjee is on tabla here:

Thanks for the suggestions, I like the Allaudin Khan one in particular.

I have also stumbled across some material by Takashi Kougo an ex-pupil of Ranadhir Roy, I have listened to some of his more fusion / meditative stuff but see there is some more classical material on YouTube, which I have not managed to hear yet. He has a lovely touch as you would expect.
