Matsya (fish symbolism) on Sarangi

Does anyone know what the Matsya (fish symbol) on the Sarangi represents?

So I asked Pankaj Mishra this over tea, and he said two things:

1. Fish are a sign of good fortune. From a bengali, this makes sense as fish is food and lots of food is a good omen and a sign of good times/fortunes.

2. Fish always swim forward. Also something good: always look forward in music and in life.

Hope this helps!

Best,
Rob

Thank you! That makes a lot of sense.
