BASS DILRUBA NOW AVAILABLE ! ! !

Postby Sitarfixer » Wed Nov 16, 2011 11:08 am

It took some time but I finally finished this project. I started it while I was still living in India. The Miraj homies got the rough body together and left it at that. Once I got back to the USA, I completed the rest of it. Skin, stain and varnish, frets, pegs, bridge and everything else were completed here. It includes a bow but I have no case for it. At the moment it is strung with Sur-Bahar gauge wire. The thunderous growl impresses, to say the least. Any number of different gauge combinations could be applied to custom tune the sound and pitch range. Here's the link. It's the only one I have.

I think whoever buys that from you should be considered under an obligation to take a video or sound recording of that beauty and post it here! :D Sort of a Cell-ruba I guess?

(Still saving for my surb myself, so I'm not in the running)

How about adding Jiwari bridges ? That would make it a complete instrument.

On a standard Dilruba there are the extra jawari strings fed from a rack of pegs up on the head stock. I considered setting those pegs in between the main pegs but it looked too kit bashed. I also considered a conventional run of pegs along the top of the peg head. Again, it would have had a total "katchra" look. Gear tuners across the nut or anywhere else would have been unthinkable !!! So, here it is, in all its basic glory. I do have one remaining bass dilruba body that is in bare wood condition with no skin. The peg head on that one is like a conventional sitar. That one would be much easier to set up with the jawari string rack. If there is any reeeel interest in that one along with a 50% deposit, I'll get right on it !!!

Thinking along - this instrument is pretty complete just the way it is. Perhaps if it is viewed as a square bottomed Esraj on steroids, all requirements for the discriminating will then be satisfied .

Tony I dont generally visit this section of the forum...but what a beauty that dilrub is! being a vit veena type player, I often thought of trying one of these..except for the bow techique, I imagine the sliding on the strings is sim. to the vit Veena

oh i just visted your website and saw the vvit veena you have...my my! how I wish I could! ever be able to afford something like that..good thing I can make and play by little fakey versions

anyway you do awesome work. If you ever decide to do a jawari tour in the NW I would love to have you tweak my veena jawaris here in Eugene OR

blessings Daniel
