bringing up this old post of mine, I have found examples of spellings (in devangri script) or spoken audio examples of most of my original questions. But........a while ago i saw 'tabla' written in Devangri, and it appears I may have been pronouncing it incorrectly! how embarrassing!
So, if anyone could help clear this up, I would be deeply appreciative!

Is it: 'tuh-blaah'
or: 'taah-bluh'?

All along I have been saying the latter, and now it appears the former is correct?

it's : tub(as in bathtub) - la (as in à la carte)
If there are just ''six tones'' in an octave [sic] then why have frets for tones that don't exist?

thank you very much! once I saw it in Devanagri (and once I had learned enough to distinguish when a letter has a long 'aa' sound) I feared my way of saying it was glaringly wrong. But, I thought perhaps some regional dialect could be coming into play as well, and thought I'd better ask so I can set it straight, and stop going around sounding so foolish. Luckily,(well, sort of) almost no one I've talked to about tabla has ever heard of it before, or remembers it afterward.

on a side note, I learned about and approached tabla from the direction of darbuka/ doumbek. Which is also often called tabla. I understand this to be the Arabic word for 'drum', but thought it was pronounced as I previously thought our dayans were. However; this could very well be an incorrect assumption as well. Is this Arabic word for 'drum' pronounced the same or different?

In Arabic it is sounds like the French pronunciation of the word "table" (rhymes with ruffle)

it sounds like he is saying it the way I was saying it originally? :?

I understand how he says 'tabl' for the djembe, but tabla sounds like taa-bluh when he says it.

Which syllable does the emphasis fall on, the first or second?
