tabla learning material for beginner

Postby dadara » Tue Jan 03, 2012 3:55 am

I learnt tabla for 1-2 years .
l Learnt a few teen taal kaydas ,palta and tukdas as well some light kehrva, dadra, rupak thekas to accompany bhajans. Can not continue my training .

IS THERE any preset structure for taal, like what to learn/play first and what next?
i.e uthan/gat ,,...theka... kayda...palta..mukda...mohra...rela....chakrdhars.....

I have some books for tabla, but I feel they are not logically prepared to learn gradually or sorted as per difficulty level.

I will appreciate if I can get even one simple sample for all these for atleast teen taal, ektaal, rupak, I will be happyand back to practice.
Thanks.

Answer: Yes and No!

Yes, according to particular gharanas
No, because it varies from gharana to gharana and also from individual to individual though there are general patterns of structure.

Also learning/playing are 2 different things!
You may not need to practice compositions exclusively, for example, concentrating on key phrases which make up compositions

Generally theme and variation compositions (Kayida etc) come in the first half of the performance, and fixed compositions come in the second, though this can be flexible to some extent. Listen to some recordings.

Kayida is usually the main composition type for developing technique and conceptualization in practice.
It is also usually the main element of a tabla solo

The basic order I generally perform based on the material I have learnt (which is an important factor) is:-
Peshkar
Kayida
Gat
Rela
Tukra
Chakkradaar

The order of composition types does not very from taal to taal as far as I have ever experienced

Its a pity that you don't have any teacher or guide for these apsects. I would strongly recommend it.
