Recommendations for Tabla shops/makers in Kolkata

Postby danlaw23 » Tue Feb 21, 2012 6:32 pm

Hi guys,

I'll be heading up to Kolkata this weekend and I'm looking to buy my first set of Tabla. Firstly, what would be a decent amount to spend on a first set? I'm not looking to spend much more than 4000 Rupees, hopefully less.

I'll most likely be going with an Indian friend, but he only has fairly basic knowledge concerning tabla.

Lastly, are there any shops/makers that you would suggest to someone in my position and budget? I've heard amazing things about Mukta Das, but I'm assuming something of his would be way out of my budget.

I'd also be grateful for any other suggestions.

Swargya Padmavibhushan Pt. Kishan Maharaj Ji even bought tabla's at Mukta Das's.
And many more gr8 artists like : Pt. Swapan Chaudhuri, Ud. Zakir Hussain, Pt. Shankar Ghosh, Pt. Anindo Chatterjee etc.
It might cost more ... but U 'll get the best of the best!
