Don't mean to hijack your thread, but since this is on Shri Gurdain Rayatt youtube channel, I thought I would point it out: It's called ...

Three Of A Kind TASTER CLIP - Tabla, Mridangam and Drumkit

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fRSGY9mA-BQ

It caught my eye because of the "drumkit" which I must confess I am not always a fan of. I'm curious to know whether anyone else thinks this particular fusion works or not: I myself am of two minds about it - it's not uninteresting, but this particular clip may not show enough the fusion material (only about 2 minutes) the other 4 minutes highlighting Shri Gurdain Rayatt.

My opinion given without any warranties, expressed or implied, that it's even relevant. It would be folly to rely on my opinion without seeking more professional tabla advice. If you are suffering from a tabla condition, seek immediate attention.

It's hard to exagerate just how impressive - beginning at minute 11:30 - his "tak ke dhene ta ke ..." rela (a lucknow rela I think).

"Gurdain started learning tabla from his father, Ustad Harkirat Singh Rayatt at the young age of three"

There is a story, quite possibly apocryphal, that when Zakirji was born, his father, the late Alla Rakka, cradled him in his arms and softly whispered in his ears a series of "te re ki te ta ka te re ki te Dha!". No doubt they ended on Sam!

I was going to say "lucky you" ... but when I think about it that could simultaneously be exhilarating .... but slightly terrifying!

The worst thing was when I started playing tabla I was 40, Gurdain-ji and his close friend and guru-bhai Harkiret were about 12 years old and attending the same classes with guru-ji as me.....I spent the first few sessions trying to get my jaw off the floor and thinking.... :o ....."what the hell have I taken on!!!", they were both awesome even then...in this clip, about two years in you can see myself and my fellow newbie on the extreme left....hanging on grimly for dear life....!!!!! I still can't play these compositions at this speed... :( ...!!

Thank you for posting this. Kudos to you for hanging on ... in spite of the age differences and all that! It was no doubt a humbling experience, but life is rather full of these but we must push on none the less!

Very sorry for the late reply!

Yes this clip was in fact a private function and I had only placed it online as a taster clip that was designed to show my sections only (for a particular application I had made)

6 yrs back now!
