Hey there, i usually play a simple 4 matra tehai with a 1,2 gap...
For example: TeTeKaTa GaDiGeN Dha-Dha- Dha 1,2 X 3
You can use any phrase ending on matra 4 for this-hope this helps!

Another way you can do is use the last 8 beats of ek taal for tihai.

Example:

Dhin Dhin Dhage Tirekite
(Tihai)
Dha Tirekite Taka Dha$
Dha Tirekite Taka Dha$
Dha TIrekite Taka Dha

or over 12 beats.

Hope thats helps, please correct me if anyone thinks I have made a mistake.

Thanks

I'm confused ... you first said using the last 8 beats of ektal above ... but after the example you say over 12 beats ... I'm not entirely sure what you intend. Also, I thought the final "Dha" should end on sam, namely what would be the first beat of the next cycle, but in your example I can't quite tell how the final "Dha" will lend on sam.

Thanks everyone for your replies.

@Tablatastic: My understanding is that your tihai goes as below -

Dhin Dhin DhaGe TRKT - 4 matras
(DhaTR KTTK Dha)x3 which make - 3 matras x 3 times = 9 matras

Total will be - 4 matras of ek taal theka + 9 matras of tihai = 13 matras, which lands the last Dha of your tihai on 'sam'. Is this correct?

Ok, I see where I went wrong ... I kept seeing 4 matras ... but it's really 3 ... works out quite nicely!

@Pascal
Hey sorry, not good at explaining things in writing. mrahul has explainined my post in simple terms and is correct. Was meant to say all over 12 beats.

Another thing you can use this concept for other taals too e.g. 13 beats - Start your tihai form the last 8 beats and same with 11, 10 and 9 beat taals.

Not at all your fault ... I misinterpreted your post .... for some reason when you wrote "over 12 beats" I misunderstood that to just cover the tihai which I then saw a 4 matra on each of 3 lines = 12 beats! and once down that blind alley I just couldn't see my way back out to make them fit!

I guess in this case |DhaTR KTTK Dha| can be replaced with |DhaTRKT TKTRKT Dha|

@mrahul

Yep can be replaced. Best thing to do is experiment with tihai's using metronome and check to make sure you are landing on the sum.
