Tabla maestro Pandit Lacchu Maharaj-Ji dies in Varanasi

Tabla maestro Pandit Lacchu Maharaj passed away on july 28, 2016 in Varanasi on Thursday. He was 72. His family members said that he was being treated at a private nursing home where he passed away at one in the morning.

The renowned Banaras Gharana musician, whose real name was Laxmi Narayan Singh, was ailing for some time and had been admitted to a private hospital on Wednesday, where he died of a heart attack, his younger brother Jai Narayan Singh said.

One of the frontline tabla players in the world, Pt Lacchu Maharaj’s funeral will take place on Friday. Other than his professional performances all over the world, he played the tabla in many Bollywood films. Filmstar Govinda, who was his relative, learnt music from him at a young age.

He had married French woman Teena and she, along with their only daughter, is in Switzerland.

Thumri exponent Girija Devi, who also lives in Varanasi, condoled the death of the maestro and said such artists are not born every day.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav has also mourned the passing away of Pt Lacchu Maharaj.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a tweet, condoled the tabla exponent's death. "Pt Lacchu Maharaj's demise is a big loss to the world of Indian Classical Music. He was a widely admired musical maestro-My condolences," the Prime Minister said.

Congres President Sonia Gandhi on Thursday condoled the death of tabla maestro Pandit Lacchu Maharaj, who passed away in Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh earlier in the day. Describing him as a frontline exponent of tabla, Gandhi said: "His contributions to classical as well as the popular film genre would forever inspire artistes in the years to come." She also expressed her solidarity with the bereaved family and admirers of Pandit Lacchu Mahraj.
