Digital Recorder (Zoom H4N or similar)

Post by mrahul » Tue Aug 16, 2016 10:02 am

Looking for some feedback on how good is a digital recorder like Zoom H4N for recording tabla. Recorders on smart phones don't seem to capture the sound so well, especially the bayan. Do the built in mics of digital recorder (Zoom H4N or similar) capture the sound nicely, particularly bayan? I am looking for something portable rather than an elaborate sound system.

Thanks for your feed back.

I think it depends on what kind of sound you're looking for. The H4n does a nice job of capturing live music in stereo, as you might hear it live yourself, but I wouldn't use it for recording the tabla to be used in a studio-type recording. You should go with a good mic for that.

I've used the Roland R-26 quite a bit for recording the tabla and it captures that natural, stereo sound very nicely (including bayan). The Roland is often compared to the H4n, though it's a bit more expensive (most find it has better sound). But they are similar.
