80+ Tabla compositions & improvisation ideas

Postby dhatitdha » Wed Aug 31, 2016 8:44 am

I have posted 80+ tabla compositions & improvisation ideas on
http://vishwamohini.com/music/index.php

More are coming . . .

by default you can see it in Devnagari language but on right side panel there is option to change language to English.

Also you can play these compositions virtually with different tempo & tabla scales.

It is free & open to all web software, you can also create & share Tabla compositions.

Hope you will enjoy this stuff.
Feel free to share your feedback & suggestions.

My aim is to bring all Tabla compositions on web which will be free & open to all. I invite you to contribute in this initiative.

this seems like an appropriate resource to share compositions
what is the way you would suggest to contribute to this
most of us I would assume could only upload what they have learnt
and in many instances the origional composer is not known

in the vocal area, the late Pt. Bhaatkhandey compiled a book
which consisted of bandishes from various people
this could become the contemporary tabla equivalent of that work

this is splitting hair
but, all the playback is on an equal tempered scale
designed for western music
this doesn't make too much difference
and it simplifies things a lot
which is why that scale was adopted
and today, even accomplished hindustani musicians use the harmonium
while is also an equal tempered instrument
more old fashioned musicians only use the tanpura by contrast

@profpandit
The best way is to share compositions and add YouTube video of same composition. You can add embed code of video in the script which will render video. So that others can get composition bols with exact distribution in matras & also a demonstration by experts.
Here is an example.
http://vishwamohini.com/music/music.php?id=171

In this way it will become great resource for all of us which will be free & open to all.

I agree many times we do not know composer, but we need to proceed with that, may be others can share such information after viewing the composition.

Regarding tempered scale, I am also working on 22Shrutis so that melody can be played using Shrutis. Soon I will add this feature on website.

Hope creating composition using Vishwamohini Script is easy. Feel free to write me if you need help

OK.
So the playback platform you are using lets you specify your tones
and doesn't restrict you to the ones defined by MIDI.
That should take care of the equal tempered scale problem.

A note on scaling up
Right now you have only a handful of pages of compositions
that can easily be scrolled
If the number of entries grows by 10x
you will probably need a better way to organize them
A search box, which is an easy addition, is not enough

Surely, I will work on better way to organize the compositions.

Currently I am working on a way where user will be able to navigate & listen all compositions from single page.

It will avoid loading of sound files for every melody. It will save their data usage & waiting time when page is loading & preparing for every melody.

Intermediate to advanced
Some of these submission are pretty esoteric
and even advanced player may not be familiar with some of them

It would be interesting to observe the rate at which submissions grow
That would be an indicator of the level of interest from the general player community

I have added a new feature "Create Collection" on http://vishwamohini.com

What are Collections?
Collections are groups of melodies compiled by user on a different themes like Performance sequence, Favorite melodies, Tutorial sequence, group of specific (Gharana, Artists) compositions, Riyaz sequence. . . etc.

Please check some collections created by me http://vishwamohini.com/collection/index.php
Hope this will help to organize melodies of personal interests.

You're headed in the right direction
As the size of the database goes,
it's organization becomes a lot more necessary
This is a good first step

@profpandit , I have added a option to play notations in "Just Intonation scale" which is natural scale in the western music.
http://vishwamohini.com/music/demo-notations.php

Soon I will adding 22Shruti scale which is complete scale in Indian classical music

IMHO the 12 note scale is enough.
It's good you've added this scale.
It will make a very small difference
in improving the quality of synthesized music

i find myself spending more and more time on this site. great value to the community. a helpful feature would be to be able to support better printing/pdf export. the browser print is just not good enough. Sometimes when the compositions don't fit the width of page the print outs get cut off. I like to print and practice. I am sure its not an easy challenge.

the automatic composition player is absolutely amazing. it sounds pretty much like a real tabla... how did you achieve that.

@tablataal I am happy to know that you find my site useful.
I will surely add feature to export in PDF, but as you pointed out correctly if composition does not fits in the width of page print gets cut off. I will try to fix this problem. Thank you for your feedback.

This tool is developed using javascript langauge. You can find more details at below link
