Very important role played by this board

Postby profpandit » Fri Jan 27, 2017 9:54 pm

Perhaps I am stating the obvious,
but this board plays a very important role
in the dissemination of knowledge
regarding the current state of affairs revolving around the practice of tabla playing.
It serves as a powerful tool to share information
at the local, national and international levels.
The founders need to be commended for initiating this exercise
and more importantly, we all as contributors deserve to give ourselves a collective pat on the back
With the ancient Indian art of tabla playing
now crossing the shores and being spread out across almost all the continents
the role played by the internet in propagating this art
is clearly obvious

I am a new member, joined this forum last year, roughly around the time I (re)started taking Tabla lessons. This forum has been a great source of information and the quality of posts and discussions is truly amazing. A big thank-you to all the moderators, contributors and the founders!

Yes. I would second that.
Based on my brief perusal of the ubiquitous threads on this board,
as a rank beginner, I have found there to be a veritable goldmine of information.
8)
Contributions freely caste by your august fraternity
are based on traditional fervour, the scientific facts and analysis and powerful insights.
But,
as an indigenous indophile in love with Indian culture
i feel that the lamp of knowledge lit by goddess Saraswati
can be brightened even more further
by adding ghee, soeaking figuratively of course.
Traditionally, a lot of the knowledge developed by the old masters
has been baked into principles encoded into the minds of the students
it has been very difficult to access this information
for people outside of the inner coterie.
With advent of the internet, things have chnaged
and we have some more powerful potentials.

@biharilal

I would second and in fact echo your statements.
Your observations regarding the facts from your perspective as a noob are your contributions
and I think they are in place and well taken in your stride.
Your most important observation is regarding your highlighting of the need to increase your participation level
as a lesson to all the contribution makers on this board
As your correct observation,
the art of tabla has been shrouded in mystery by your veritable masters
In our age of internet it is better to share your knowledge for the benefit of all your fellow online users
than to conceal it and curate its access in the interest of improving its quality.
It is said that to refine gold you have to heat it for a long time
but in this case I think based on your context of the internet
the spirit of your discourse should be one of open-ness
based on the desires of our founding fathers such as Tim-Berners Lee
There is, of course, a somewhat clash of approach between east and west in this case.
Your scientific methods encourage the open sharing of your inidivdual knowledge
whereas your guru-shishya parampara which is your method of knowledge propagation of your tabla art and other such bodies of knowledge
is more based on being selective about whom to share the knowledge with
and only taking your best disciples under your wings.
