Hello everyone,
I just received a DVD of pandit Nikhil banerjee released by Doordarshan with tabla accompaniment by Anindo Chattejee. The website is
http://www.musicplusvideo.com/index.html.
I think this is in PAL but I have a VCD player which plays this DVD. Also pandit bhimsenji's pooria dhanashree is awesome, probably in his 50's at his best...
regards,
kalpit pandya.

The release is from doordarshan, S. Rao (sitarist) gives a little intro. The dvd is very good both sound wise and imaging, but it is in black and white. Good close ups as well.

Link won't work for me, I'm afraid.
BTW Doordarshan have been releasing various performances of yesteryear from their archives. I have a 2 VCD set of Asad Ali Khan on Rudra Veena (colour though) & several dance ones too.

Thanks Kalpit for the information. I visited that. But my question how does the PAL format DVD work in NTSC? You said you are having a VCD player and it is working there. Can you explain more. I found there are lot of other DVD too. Before I buy I must be sure. I know the VCD always work in USA irrespective of format, but no idea about DVD.
thanks again for the info.
NICK:
Dont use the link here. Instead type the 'www.musicplusvideo.com' in the address bar of your computer by typing it. THen you will find all the information on HOme page -- there you can select Nikhil or others.
Yes, its good idea that Doordarshan is realising the music archives.
Thanks
regards

Just viewed it today.
Excellent . Any sitarist who wants to understand the Beenkar Ang of Alaap / Jod/ Jhala must view this video. Well done DD this Indian release would benefit the Indian musicians. Indians must preserve its legacy and should not let it fall in the hands of those who do not understand it.

The fast taans were absolutely in control and beautifully executed. Not many know how to play those taans anymore.

Indrajit,
This was discussed some time back- PAL format DVD's will not work in NTSC players- i.e. almost all the DVD players bought here in the U.S. However, my computer plays them although I had to download some codecs to get it to not distort the sound. Works fine now. Be forewarned!

regarding playing pal in north america...
I have the SP DVD "journey with saraswati" and it is PAL. It wouldn't play on anything but my computer. Then I bought a cheapo dvd player by Philips with divx support and just about every other format. PAL stuff works great. The dvd player was $60 CAN.

Great DVD, got mine yesterday, in less than a week from India to Sweden,
11 Euro and shipping included. Fantastic!
Ok it's black & white but the filming is great with lots of close-up and very nice playing. A must have!

Just wondering why it's in B/W as they both look like they did on my colour stuff from the BBC in the early 80s. About the same age/time.
re Sri Kalpitji's VCD player. It must be DVD player too as a VCD player only wouldn't play it.
